“Help clean our island & win super prizes!”
That’s how social and environmental protection organization Green Phenix, Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao, and the Litterati Cleanup Challenge are announcing the return of the #MakeTheTurtleSmile initiative. From February 14th to May 14th of this year, the awareness and activation campaign around the prevention and reduction of pollution in Curaçao will be making a return to the island for the third time.
Where the first two editions of the initiative were mostly focusing on education and the collection of plastic and aluminum around the island, the focus this year is on the collection of bottles and cans. During the three months of run time, the goal of the campaign is to collect at least 40,000 bottles and cans, which would be a great towards step towards matching the 60,000 cans and bottles that were collected during previous campaigns.
Green Phenix at the center
All of the collected bottles and cans can be brought to Green Phenix directly at the Paviljoen Zeelandia in Willemstad. They are open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 7AM to 5PM. Additionally, collected litter can be delivered at Sambil, just inside the Carrefour supermarket there, on every last Saturday of the month. On these Saturdays, the person who has collected the most litter and photographed it with the Litterati app will also win a nice prize. On the rest of the days when Green Phenix is open for business, every 25 bottles and/or cans handed in at the organization are good for a stamp. These stamps have real value and can be exchanged for cool prizes as well.
Litterati
For the third edition of #MakeTheTurtleSmile, Litterati, the app on a mission to create a litter-free world, is adding an extra dimension to the initiative by organizing the Litterati Cleanup Challenge. The idea behind the challenge is to encourage people to make Curaçao a cleaner place by cleaning up litter around the island and photographing it with the Litterati app. By collecting at least 50,000 pieces of litter, the Litterati team will be able to map the nature and distribution of litter in Curaçao, which is data that can in turn be extremely useful for local authorities for discovering (and changing) local litter and pollution patterns.
As Green Phenix puts it themselves, the #MaketheTurtleSmile campaign aims to mobilize as many people as possible to work for a cleaner Curaçao. Do you want to get involved?
