A while ago, we wrote about the Kunuku Man and his waste clean-up initiatives on Curaçao, and in the weekend of February 14th, the Kunuku Man was at it again. One of Curaçao’s most active advocates of a cleaner Curaçao organized yet another clean-up on the island, this time in the capital Willemstad. With the help of a group of motivated volunteers, the Kunuku Man cleaned the Kaminda di Brievengat, a street in the southern part of the city, as the objective this time was to clean up an ordinary street on the island.
Showing love on Valentine’s Day
The Kunuku Man could not have chosen a better moment to organize the most recent waste removal campaign, as Valentine’s Day provided the perfect opportunity to show some love. Not just to a partner or a spouse, but to a whole island. During the clean-up of the Kaminda di Brievengat on Sunday, no less than 246 kilos of waste were removed from the street and its surroundings. That included more than 10 kilos of aluminum (mainly cans), around 24 kilos of plastic (mainly bottles), 135 kilos of glass, and about 76 kilos of residual waste. Apart from this residual waste, all of the collected trash will be recycled in Curaçao to promote the local circular economy.
Constant cleaning
As we wrote earlier, last weekend’s clean-up action was not the first and definitely not the last campaign organized by the Kunuku Man. What started in the first half of 2020 as a volunteer initiative to clean Curaçao’s local beaches has grown into an almost weekly initiative nowadays. Since the first clean-up back in May 2020, the Kunuku Man and his team of volunteers have cleaned more than 50 locations in Curaçao, from beaches to natural areas and ordinary streets. For almost two years now, they have been coming together at these different locations on Sundays between 12:00 and 15:00 to make Curaçao a little bit cleaner, one plastic bottle at a time. Or as the Kunuku Man himself put it, “Curaçao MOET schoner!!!”.
Despite his amazing work and fantastic initiatives, the Kunuku Man still only has less than 200 followers on Instagram at the time of writing. In a world where a simple selfie on the beach can make someone “famous”, that’s unacceptable. Look for the Kunuku Man, follow him, support him. He’s doing great things for Curaçao.
