Curaçao will soon be receiving a new factory on Bullenbaai on the island’s Southwestern side. This factory will be used to prepare plant-based oils as raw materials for the production of renewable diesel. It is projected to produce 13,000 barrels per day on 4,7 hectares of rented terrain which includes a jetty.
This project will be led by the Texan company Steamboat Fuels LLC and is expected to be completed in two years. Steamboat Fuels LLC is a project development firm focused on building and operating renewable energy projects that benefit societies around the world and one of the ways they accomplish this is through renewable diesel production. They have over 60 years of experience in their fields of expertise — which includes renewable energy, energy, and electricity — and have also established a branch in Curaçao named Steamboat Fuels Curaçao bv.
The Steamboat Fuels headquarters has invested $180 million in the upcoming project in Bullenbaai and it has been estimated that the pretreatment firm will generate over 600 construction jobs and 130 long-term jobs. In the factory, the plant-based oils and animal fats will be cleansed of unnecessary water and chemical elements in the preparation process. This will all take a place in a sustainable and environment-friendly manner, taking extreme care not to contaminate the air quality on the island.
This project represents a momentous endeavor that is poised to put Curaçao on the international map as a nation that is making great strides in sustainable energy production and will be a phenomenal calling card for our island.
