Aqualectra, Curaçao’s public utilities company that produces and distributes water and electricity to more than 80.000 households and companies on the island, recently started an ambitious project regarding the replacement of traditional streetlights by LED street lighting. The pilot project, which focused on the lights along the Weg naar Westpunt, Schottegatweg Oost and the Emancipatieboulevard, proved to be a success, so the company has now announced the next phases of its plans.
Almost 33.000 streetlights
The idea behind Aqualectra’s plans is to replace all of the streetlights on the island, which comes down to about 33.000 units. The project has received very positive reactions so far, so the company has announced the initiation of phases two and three. These days, Aqualectra will be replacing streetlights at the Ergilio Hato roundabout, along the Pater Eeuwensweg and the Helmin Wiels Boulevard, ending at the Roberto Beto Adamus roundabout. On Sunday, August 14th, the next batch of streetlights will be replaced by LED units. This concerns the crossing of the Arubastraat and the Hoogstraat, along and crossing over the Julianabrug, all the way up to the Scharloo exit.
The works are expected to take several days at least and will take place daily between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM (08h00 to 16h00). For locals and other parties planning to make use of the area mentioned above, it should be noted that some traffic issue might arise as a result of the works. This is mainly due to the fact that part of the existing streetlights is located in between lanes.
A more durable Curaçao
LED, which stands for Light Emitting Diode, is a type of lighting that is especially known for its durability and energy efficiency. This applies to indoor lighting and dashboard lights, for example, but also to street lighting, as shown by Aqualectra. Besides its longer lifespan (up to 40 times longer than traditional light bulbs) and considerable energy efficiency when compared to traditional streetlights, the light emitted by LED units is also softer on the eyes, which improves driving comfort for all road users in Curaçao.
