“The best coffee you will ever have. And the freshest, because we roast all of our coffee beans in our roastery on the island!”
Visit the website of Bonchi Boneiru, the first and only coffee roastery on Bonaire, and this text is the first thing that will be greeting you. A project by Dutch data analyst Nort van Hulten, Bonchi Boneiru is the result of a passion for high-quality coffee and the ambition to make a positive contribution, not just to Bonaire and the Dutch Caribbean economies, but to the planet as a whole.
Change of pace
After working as a freelance analyst for a few years back in the European Netherlands, Nort decided in 2020 to look for a change of pace. A calmer, less stressful way of life that would allow him to work on his own projects. “After working as a freelance business analyst for two years, I decided that I really wanted to create something, something that could contribute to the community, something that could contribute positively to our planet as well”, Nort explains.
He goes on by explaining how he got to the idea of Bonchi Boneiru and what motivated him to turn idea into practice. He has been a coffee aficionado for years himself and it was this love for the bean that made him set up his own coffee roastery on the island on Bonaire. On top of that, the young entrepreneur recognized an opportunity. “There is no fresh coffee of high quality in Bonaire, despite the island’s proximity to some of the most popular sources of coffee beans in the world”, he explains, “That’s how the idea [for Bonchi Boneiru] was born”.
Coffee region of the world
The fact is that Bonaire, like the rest of the Caribbean Netherlands, is closely located to some of the most well-known coffee-producing nations in the world, including Colombia, Nicaragua and Guatemala. This proximity to sources does not only all but guarantee a constant supply of beans, but also drastically reduces logistical complexity, which results in a much smaller carbon footprint. This aspect of the new business fits perfectly into its desire to be an ecologically friendly, responsible operation.
On top of that, Nort has stated that Bonchi Boneiru will be working directly with coffee producers instead of via middlemen, so as to secure optimal selling prices for the producers. In the new company’s approach, satisfaction along the entire supply chain will result in coffee of the highest quality in Bonaire. The roastery is also planning various socially responsible activities to help sell its coffee on the island, starting with an extensive introduction and tasting on Sunday, July 10th, at the LVV (Landbouw, Veeteelt & Visserij or Agriculture, Livestock & Fisheries Service) Bonaire site, situated at Kaminda di Lagoen in Kralendijk.
